Mengniu Pure Milk Exceeds 140% of Aflatoxin by Standard.

On the 24th, the results of a recent spot check on the quality of 200 liquid milk products were published. The spot check found that the Mengniu and Changfu pure milk did not meet the standards values of aflatoxin M1.

In the spot check, a batch of products produced by Mengniu Dairy (Meishan) Co., Ltd. was found to exceed 140% the standards values of aflatoxin M1. In this regard, Mengniu admitted this test result on its official website yesterday and apologized to the national consumers. Besides, it stated that all the products in the batch were sealed and destroyed.

Mengniu pure milk exceeds 140% in Class A  carcinogens.

It is reported that the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a random inspection of 200 liquid dairy products produced by 128 enterprises in 21 provinces in October this year. It involves 18 projects, including protein, acidity, lead, inorganic arsenic, total mercury, chromium, aflatoxin M1, Staphylococcus aureus, melamine and so on.

The inspection report issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine showed that Mengniu Dairy's over-standard products were detected by the Fuzhou Inspection Center of National Processing Food Quality Supervision. The highest value stipulated by the state is 0.5μg/kg. The measured value of aflatoxin M1 on the batch of Mengniu was 1.2μg/kg, which was over 140%. Mengniu's over-standard products in the 250ML/box-packed were produced by Meishan Company on October 18, 2011.

According to public data, aflatoxin M1 is known as a carcinogenic substances and has strong carcinogenicity.

Another pure milk (premium milk) produced by Fujian Changfu Dairy Co., Ltd. was also found to be unqualified for aflatoxin M1, which was 80% higher than the standard.

Mengniu said that the batches of the problematic product have not been sold.

As to this test result, Mengniu issued a report on the sampling of products at the Mengniu Meishan factory on its official website yesterday, acknowledging the test results and apologizing to the national consumers.

The reporter found that in Mengniu’s statement, consumers were concerned about whether the problematic product has been sold to the market. How will the sell-out products be handled? What is the quantity of the problematic product in this batch? And the explanation on whether it involves compensation for consumers is not clear.

In this regard, the reporter contacted Meng Jian Dai, vice president of Lu Niujun yesterday. He said that Fuzhou quality inspection institute detected the sampling in  Mengniu's Meishan factory in Sichuan, so the products have not been sold. After detected with the problem, the company sealed and destroy the storage, so it did not involve a series of problems like recall events.

Mengniu Dairy released a statement on this incident again At 21:30 last night, and emphasized that the batch of products has not been delivered from the warehouse.

Further Survey

Mengniu produced Meishan will not flow into Beijing market

Pure milk contained carcinogens will be sold in Beijing? Will related products be removed in the shop?

The reporter consulted Carrefour, Wumart, Wal-Mart and other supermarkets last night. Relevant people said that they have not received any notice to remove the product from shelves. But their Mengniu products are mostly produced in local, problematic products in Meishan will not enter Beijing.

Aflatoxin can induce liver cancer

Wang Dingmian, an expert on Dairy yesterday said that the aflatoxin in milk comes from the feed of dairy cows. It will induce cancer when it is absorbed in the body for a long period. However, aflatoxin M1 in Mengniu milk exceeded more than 100% of the standard. If the product is already on the market, it must be dumped at once.

It is reported that aflatoxin M1 is quite stable, and even pasteurization can not kill it. Therefore the detection of aflatoxin M1 should not only be detected in the ingredients of feed, but also the finished product.

Aflatoxin was classified as a Class A carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) Cancer Research Institute in 1993 and is a highly toxic substance. The aflatoxin has a destructive effect on human and animal liver tissues. In severe cases, it can cause liver cancer or even death.

Quality test results in Liquid milk product (partial) are in the following included product name, production date (lot number), spot check result and main unqualified items.

Fujian Changfu Pure Milk (Superior Milk) 2011-10-08 Unqualified Aflatoxin M1 (measured value: 0.9μg/kg)

Mengniu Pure Milk (Meishan) 2011-10-18 Unqualified Aflatoxin M1 (measured value: 1.2μg/kg)

The inspection units are all National Processing Food Quality Supervision Inspection Center (Fuzhou)

The highest value stipulated by the state for aflatoxin M1 is 0.5 μg/kg.

Aflatoxin definition: A toxin produced by mold that can damage the liver and may lead to liver cancer. Aflatoxins cause cancer in some animals.

In 1993, aflatoxin was classified as a Class A carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) Cancer Research Institute, and it is a highly toxic substance. The aflatoxin has a destructive effect on human and animal liver tissues, and can cause liver cancer or even death in severe cases. Aflatoxin B1 is the most common mold in naturally contaminated foods, and it’s toxicity and carcinogenicity are also the strongest.

Aflatoxin is a metabolite produced by aspergillus flavus, aspergillus parasiticus. When the food is not dried in time or stored improperly, it is often easily contaminated by aspergillus flavus or aspergillus parasiticus and produce such toxins.

Aflatoxins exist in the soil, various plants, animals and nuts, especially peanuts and walnuts. Aflatoxins are also frequently found in soy, rice, corn, macaroni, condiment milk, dairy products, cooking oil and so on. Not only aflatoxin milk, but also aflatoxin peanuts, aflatoxin corn and other aflatoxin food will pose a threat to the human body!

If not continuously ingested, aflatoxins generally do not accumulate in the body. After ingested about one week, most of the aflatoxins will be expelled by breathing, urine, feces, etc.

Research work by disease research institutions in Asia and Africa has shown that aflatoxins in food are positively correlated with liver cell cancer (LCC). Long-term consumption of foods containing low concentrations of aflatoxin is considered to be the main cause of liver cancer, intestinal cancer, and other diseases. In addition to this, aflatoxins and other pathogenic factors (such as hepatitis virus) have a superimposed effect on the induction of human diseases. Aflatoxin, found at present is the strongest carcinogen. Its carcinogenicity is 900 times that of cream yellow, 75 times greater than that of dimethylnitrosamine induced liver cancer, and 4000 times greater than 3,4 benzopyrene. It is mainly inducing liver cancer in animals, and also can induce stomach, kidney, rectal, breast, ovarian and small intestine cancer.
